Collection "Journals of the German Enlightenment" (DFG-Project)

Retrospective Digitization of Scientific Review Organs and Literary Magazines from the 18th and 19th Century in the German-speaking Area

Subject of the project "Retrospective Digitization of Scientific Review Organs and Literary Magazines from the 18th and 19th Century in the German-speaking Area", funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), is a digital reconstruction of the complete corpora of the major review organs and literary magazines originating from the age of the German Enlightenment and the following epochs. The first and foremost criterion for the selection of the periodicals is their recording in the "Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften 1750 - 1815", elaborated by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

Within the the first project phase (2000 - 2003) 44 periodicals, which are widely recorded in the "Index", have been digitized and generated for a database. Thereby they were provided for research.
During the second period (2006 - 2008) 116 supplementary periodicals were added. The journal Berlinische Monatsschrift, which has already been digitized in the pilot project, is incorporated into this website as well.
In a third project phase (2011 - 2016) 31 additional periodicals from the "Index" are currently being digitized and enhanced with metadata to enable searching. Furthermore the total display of all periodicals (project phase 1 and 2 included) will be relaunched within the third project phase. This step implies an obvious improvement regarding the ease of use. For example, all periodicals which have been migrated to the new website allow printing of single articles in PDF format.

By digitisation of periodicals, which were recorded in the "Index", a general and comprehensive access to the age of German Enlightenment in its main medium as well as for German classicism and romanticism is provided for the first time. Especially this will be of interest to the German language and literature studies and philosophy but also for many other disciplines. Particularly research in history has undergone a major upward trend in recent years. The digital release of these periodicals within the frame of this project initially enables a comparative research by a synoptic access to German scientific publications from the age of Enlightenment and following intellectual movements.

The project is carried out in cooperation with Georg Olms Verlag AG, which supplied the microfiche editions of the periodicals forming the basis of the digitization and the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, that provided the electronic edition of the "Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften 1750-1815" which is necessary for subject indexing.

The "Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften 1750-1815" and the "Systematischer Index zu deutschsprachigen Rezensionszeitschriften des 18. Jahrhunderts" are also offered in a shared database by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

Technique

The periodicals are digitized in bitmap format and the bibliographic data of journal articles are made searchable via database. Search results offer a direct link to corresponding full texts.

Steps in project phase 1 and 2:

  1. Bitonal scanning of periodicals on masterfiches with a resolution of 600 dpi
  2. Data extraction from the "Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften 1750 - 1815" which exploited contents and additional recording of tables of contents/indices
  3. Data conversion (image files with standard software, content exploiting data from SGML/Ebind-DTD to BRS through PERL scripts) and processing of tables of contents in database form
  4. Surface generation (HTML, programming of CGI interface)

Steps in project phase 3 (period 2011 - 2016):

  1. Bitonal scanning of periodicals on masterfiches with a resolution of 600 dpi
  2. Data extraction from the "Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften 1750 - 1815" which exploited contents and additional manual metadata recording of various volumes, tables of contents/indices in MODS/METS format
  3. Import of image files and metadata (MODS/METS format) into the digitization platform Goobi
  4. Designing the user interface (modulation of the viewer interface according to the corporate design)
  5. Migration of all periodicals from the project phases 1 and 2 into the digitization platform (integrated presentation of all digitized images under a common interface).

Indexing

The exploit of the contents is of crucial importance for the use of the digitized review organs and literary journals. The searchable data are a result of the project "Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften 1750 - 1815" elaborated by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities and funded 1975 - 1987 by the Volkswagen Foundation and the DFG. The contents of approximately 200 periodicals and thus the majority of journals digitized in the project, is exploited among multiple aspects by the "Index", which is provided in machine-readable format for the project. By presenting periodicals in full text, the project appears to be a logical continuation of the "Index", developed with great effort, which after having been converted is continued to be usable. The contents of the periodicals not recorded in the "Index" are made available through the manual recording of tables of contents or indices.
